More than 3,500 tonnes of waste including asbestos removed from public beach

NSW Government has confirmed that excavation of 3,800 tonnes of waste buried beneath North Stockton beach has been completed.

The work was completed as a priority after coastal erosion threatened the security of the site, which is a former landfill site.

The geofabric covering the site was exposed during recent storm activity. The site, as a landfill location, was operational between the late 1960s and early 1970s and was close to encroaching on crown land.

The 3,800 tonnes, which included asbestos-containing material was removed and replaced with fresh sand to improve the area.

The waste was transported, under supervision, to the Summerhill Waste Management Centre, with input from the Soil Conservation Service, Hunter Water and Environmental Protection Authority, NSW Branch.

The City of Newcastle consulted with the Worimi and Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Councils, and further work in terms of rehabilitating the area and revegetating areas will occur in the coming months.
