Firefighters investigating spread of asbestos after property goes up in smoke

A fire at a home in Nowra has raised concerns among the local community as Fire and Rescue teams investigate the risk to the local community after it was noted that the property was “full of asbestos”.

Inspector Craig Hughes from NSW Fire and Rescue explained that attending personnel sprayed the house with an adhesive to prevent any movement of the asbestos fibres but some may have been airborne as the fire took hold.

“Unfortunately that’s basically what happens when a building like this catches fire,” Inspector Hughes said.

“We have the smoke plume that goes up, yes there’ll be some fibres in there but hopefully with all the vegetation that’s around the house it’s actually kept the smoke plume down, and caught any of the asbestos.”

“The house is totally damaged by smoke and heat, with the main bedroom where the fire’s actually eaten through the floorboards and through the timber beams,” Inspector Hughes said.

“So the house at this stage is not livable for anybody, and more than likely will have to be torn down.”
