Early action recommended to prevent mould outbreaks ahead of damp spring forecast

With a highly likely La Niña event forecast across the eastern coast of Australia, residents are being advised to check their homes for mould. Ongoing periods of moisture and humidity throughout large sections of Queensland and New South Wales, paired with warmer weather throughout the spring and summer periods, create the ideal breeding ground for mould.

The warning comes as parts of both starts are still experiencing flooding and the wet forecast looks set to continue throughout spring and into early summer. Increases in humidity indoors, as well as closing homes against rain or other weather events, can result in mould infestations.

Residents who suspect existing mould outbreaks are advised to thoroughly check their homes for mould before the weather declines, in order to prevent the likelihood of a significant outbreak.

The five key areas to check for mould, that may not be considered regularly include:

  • behind couches and bedheads, which are often set against walls, limiting airflow;
  • wardrobes, which are also lacking ventilation and may contain damp items like shoes, coats and umbrellas;
  • linen cupboards, which can be breeding grounds for mould if clothes aren’t dried properly;
  • kitchen cupboards or appliances, which, due to high moisture levels in the environment, can be ideal places for mould growth;
  • consider cutting away outdoor vegetation that limits sunlight and airflow – the better the airflow and light, the less likely mould is to take hold.

Experts also recommend ensuring adequate airflow through properties when the weather permits – sunny and dry days are ideal for airing out the home and optimising airflow. In addition, ceiling fans, pedestal fans, and air conditioners, run on dry mode, can assist with improving ventilation in properties and limiting indoor moisture levels.
