Aussies with respiratory concerns seek out mould-preventing tech

With many Australians, especially those in regions affected by record-breaking rain, struggling with mould outbreaks have become commonplace in many homes. Experts have warned that ongoing exposure to mould can cause health concerns, and those with respiratory conditions or asthma are even more susceptible to the irritation of mould spores.

One Sydney woman who spoke with 7 News explained that air purifiers had lessened her asthma symptoms. With mould removal products in short supply in many places at the moment, a move to devices could help prevent outbreaks by circulating and filtering the air, although experts warn they are not a cure for mould but rather a step in preventing it from developing.

One in five Australians suffer from allergies, either from pollen, mould or other pollutants, so there are health benefits to using purifiers or dehumidifiers, as well as the benefit of protecting your home environment.

“Air cleaners are intended to remove the particles floating around in the air – the stuff we can see and the stuff we can’t see,” one air quality expert noted. “That’s what keeps everything from getting mouldy – if you pull the moisture out of the air, that moisture isn’t available to condense on cooler surfaces indoors.”

For many, the price point of purifying devices can be limiting, and they need to be used in a certain way to obtain potential benefits. Determining that the device is fit for purpose in regards to the size of the room is essential before purchasing because devices that are too small won’t make a tangible difference.

Experts also note that ongoing maintenance, which is highly recommended, can increase the cost of running them – for example, replacing filters in air purifiers. Ensuring adequate natural ventilation is a highly recommended alternative for those looking to prevent mould and irritants in the home, as long as the outside humidity is low. As always, the recommendation is that if the mould is larger than a dinner plate, consult an expert for assessment and removal.
