Worker pulled out of a six-metre deep hole at construction site

A worker at a Brisbane construction site has been taken to hospital after falling six metres down a hole at the site in Wolloongabba around 9 o’clock this morning.

Mark Buchard, Inspector for the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services explained that that Fire and Rescue crews attended the site after a co-worker called emergency services.

“The hole is approximately 6 metres deep by 6 metres wide. On arrival crews found him flat on his back at the bottom of the hole,” Inspector Burchard said.

“The gentleman was conscious and spoke with QAS. He appeared to be in good spirits considering the fall that he had.”

Emergency personnel worked to create a control line, explained Inspector Burchard, and were able to lift him out of the hole with the assistance of paramedics from the Queensland Ambulance Service. The extrication took around forty minutes.

QAS Senior Operations Supervisor Adrian Tong said the incident was “an unfortunate accident”.

“The patient was complaining of some rib pain and some pain to his upper limbs or pelvis.”

“He was conscious and alert, suffering from some back pain,” Mr Tong said.

The worker is being treated at the Princess Alexandria Hospital in Brisbane. The operator of the site, believed to be part of an Urban Utilities upgrade project, has not made a comment, but
