Hurstville school latest to contain asbestos, among more than 350 NSW schools

A New South Wales school has been revealed as containing asbestos in one of its buildings, months after it was revealed that more than 350 NSW schools also contained the material.

The asbestos was uncovered at Woniora Road Public School in Hurstville on Thursday last week.

The discovery was made by chance, after a worker accidentally put his foot through the ceiling of a building while completing electrical works.

Back in March, estimates contained in the New South Wales budget showed that the number of schools found to contain asbestos had tripled in the 18 month period prior.

352 NSW schools have been marked as containing asbestos materials.

According to a NSW Education spokesman, the school is open but the area that contains the asbestos has been cordoned off for the safety of students and staff.

“The area is being monitored by occupational hygienists in strict accordance with all applicable legislation, regulations, policies and guidelines to ensure the area has been fully remediated,” he said.

“The area was cordoned off and safety measures and air monitoring were put in place to ensure there was no risk to students, staff or the local community.

“A clearance certificate was issued by an independent hygienist this morning (Friday) to confirm that the areas are safe for students and staff to occupy and the school is currently operational.”
