Trinitas Group was engaged by Transport for NSW to undertake specialist asbestos removal and clearance works on three historic Class 36 (C36) locomotive boilers — 3646A, 3648A, and 3670B — at the Cardiff Rail Maintenance Centre. Working in collaboration with Transport Heritage NSW and principal contractor Specbuilt Construction, Trinitas provided enclosure assessment and smoke tests, asbestos control air monitoring, visual clearance inspections, and clearance certificates to safely remediate these significant heritage assets. The project ensured the boilers could be preserved and prepared for future heritage or display purposes while meeting all current safety and regulatory standards.

The C36 class locomotives were the backbone of New South Wales express passenger services from the mid-1920s until the end of steam operations. Introduced in 1925 and built by Eveleigh Railway Workshops and Clyde Engineering, these powerful 4-6-0 steam engines hauled the state’s premier expresses for decades.

Many were later rebuilt with Belpaire boilers, and these three units represent important surviving examples of NSW’s rich railway heritage. The images above document key stages of the asbestos removal works, including containment setup, boiler stripping, and final clearance activities.
