Asbestos removal safety blitz underway in QLD

WorkSafe Queensland has confirmed it is conducting a state-wide blitz on businesses and their compliance with licensing regarding asbestos and asbestos-related material handling throughout August.

Per the Work Health and Safety Act and Regulation, relevant codes of practice and managing risks and exposure to asbestos fibres, businesses will be audited throughout the month following notification to WHSQ of intended removal.

The state safety authority has recommended that businesses preparing for asbestos removal work should ensure they comply with the conditions of their asbestos removal license, and ensure they are familiar with the appropriate safety legislation.

This is in relation to Part 8 – Asbestos in the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (the WHS Regulation), How to safely remove asbestos Code of Practice 2021 (PDF, 2.22 MB) and the transitional arrangements for asbestos.

Businesses are also reminded that they will need to provide the following to WHSQ inspectors upon audits being conducted:

  • your asbestos removal control plan
  • records of the training of your workers in regard to content of asbestos removal control plan
  • any relevant licences
  • certificate/s of completion of specified VET training (or transitional training requirements if applicable) for workers and supervisors
  • a copy of air monitoring results (if air monitoring required)
  • copies of clearance certificates (if the removal work is completed).
