Mould takes over cars and homes in QLD, new report shows almost 1 in 5 affected

As many as one in five Queensland homes have been affected by mould, according to new research. The report, called the Mitsubishi Electric Health Home Trends, noted that 18 per cent of Queenslanders had a mould problem in their properties.

The figures nationwide show that an estimated 5.7 million people have potentially harmful mould in their homes, with 22 per cent having mould in at least one of the rooms in their home.

The report also noted that 67 per cent of respondents had clothing or belongings ruined by mould in the past year, costing on average $427, and young people are the most likely to be affected.

Young people are more likely to live in shared homes or rental properties, where ventilation may not be optimal, including extractor fans, roof leaks and poor circulation.

One Queensland woman noted that even cars aren’t safe from mould outbreaks when she found her car, which had been parked in a garage, inundated with mould.

Residents impacted by mould are recommended to attempt to treat the mould themselves if it is smaller than a dinner plate with a dedicated mould removal product. If it is larger, or widespread and related to structural issues in a property, it’s recommended that residents call professionals to attend to it.

Queensland Health has directed those affected to their fact sheet on managing mould, with a note that those attempting to clean up mould themsleves should ensure they utilise proper PPE.
