Three directors and company charged over alleged illegal waste dumping

The Environmental Protection Authority has charged a Melbourne company and three directors after allegedly dumping waste that had been contaminated with asbestos.

Kyle Road Developments Pty Ltd and its three directors were charged on Monday with depositing industrial waste at a site that wasn’t licensed to accept it.

The allegations relate to plans by the company to build high-density apartments at a 16-hectare site in Altona North. Online records show that the company plans to construct more than 600 homes at the address, which is a former industrial site.

A spokesperson from the EPA explained that the company had been charged after allegedly moving and dumping contaminated soil at the proposed development site.

“The company had earlier planned to remove asbestos-contaminated soil for transport to a specially licensed landfill,” he said.

“As the matter is now before the courts, EPA will be making no further comment.”

The Victorian Planning Authority has previously approved the plans to develop the site as part of the Altona North Precinct, moving it from an industrial area to mixed-use residential.
