Canberra store closed over asbestos risk

A clothing store in Canberra has been forced to close after asbestos was found at the site.

WorkSafe ACT has issued a non-disturbance notice to the business in Kennedy, which prevents access to the building until an asbestos inspection is carried out by licensed assessors.

The notice was issued after an anonymous tip-off to the ACT workplace safety regulator, according to a spokeswoman.

“No one should enter, use or occupy the site until a licensed asbestos assessor analyses the possible asbestos-containing materials and advises WorkSafe ACT of the outcome,” the WorkSafe spokeswoman said.

“Access to the affected workplace will be prohibited until the area is deemed safe.”

The owner of the store explained that the store itself and the goods inside were unaffected.

“Work is being done at the moment and we are dealing with WorkSafe directly,” she said.
