Warning over contaminated road base containing asbestos

An amount of bonded asbestos has been uncovered in unmarked road base at a regional waste facility on the Fleurieu peninsula.

The Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority’s Goolwa Waste and Recycling Depot confirmed it had discovered the material and is seeking assistance from the public.

It’s understood the material may have contaminated recycled road base material between the first of September 2020 and March 31, 2021, from the Strathalbyn, Yankalilla or Goolwa Waste and Recycling Depots.

In a statement, a FRWA spokesperson said recent testing of recycled road base material had identified “a very small quantity of bonded asbestos within the stockpile.”

“The Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority has recently undertaken testing of a 4500 tonne stockpile of recycled crushed concrete at the Goolwa Waste and Recycling Depot, and has found four small pieces of bonded asbestos weighing a total of 5.1 gram.”
