Two workers have suffered serious injuries after a gas explosion at a home which was undergoing renovation works on the northern beaches of Sydney yesterday afternoon.

Paramedics attended the scene in Seaforth just after 2 pm yesterday to treat the two men, who were described as having “significant burns” to their legs, arms, faces and bodies.

The tradesmen were completing the waterproofing of a bathroom in the home and fumes built up in the space due to a lack of ventilation. One worker then started a blow torch, igniting the explosion and causing both men to catch alight.

“A 21-year-old male has around 45% burns to their limbs and upper torso,” explained NSW Ambulance Inspector David Morris. “The second patient is more in a serious condition, he sustained around 70% burns.”

The two men were transported to the Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious condition.

SafeWork NSW has confirmed it has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
