Workplace death in Christchurch

A worker has died after a workplace incident in Christchurch this morning.

The incident occurred at United Steel, and it is believed the worker was struck by a piece of falling steel.

New Zealand Police confirmed that they were notified of an incident just after 2 pm. The police spokesman declined to provide further information due to police still working at the site.

“We will issue an update proactively when we are able to,” he said.

A St John Ambulance Spokesman said that an ambulance was dispatched around 2 pm, and explained that, “given the outcome, we cannot provide further information.”

Ben Hammond, the group health and safety manager for the company which owns United Steel, said the Christchurch site had closed and an investigation was underway.

“There is a process we need to go through,” he said.

According to the national safety body, the “matter is now under investigation we are unable to provide any further comment,”
