Severed hand after workplace incident near Newcastle

A worker remains in the John Hunter Hospital this afternoon after he severed his hand at a Baiada chicken processing facility in Beresfield, north of Newcastle, this morning.

Following reports of a serious workplace injury, three NSW Ambulance crews and a critical care team were dispatched just before 9 am.

Inspector Mark Gardiner explained that the paramedics worked on the man for a period at the site, before transporting him to hospital once his condition had stabilised.

He described the scene as quite confronting for first responders. “This was a very gruesome injury,” said Mr Gardiner.

He also explained that the service has “been responding to a lot of workplace incidents of late.”

“We need everyone to be more vigilant when at work and look out for their colleagues,” he said.

SafeWork NSW has confirmed it is investigating the incident, which according to early reports, saw the man lose most of his hand.
