$30,000 fine over incident involving high voltage power lines

A Brisbane electrical contractor has faced the Brisbane Magistrates Court this week over charges under the Electrical Safety Act, relating to unsafe electrical practises which exposed a person to a risk of death or serious injury.

The charges relate to an incident in July 2018, during which a worker employed by the defendant was installing edge protection on a shed roof in Gatton. The worker was seriously injured when the metal railing he was holding onto came into contact with a high voltage overhead power line.

The company was found guilty and taking into account an early guilty plea and that it was the company’s first offence and their remorse over the incident, they were fined $30,000.

Magistrate Belinda Merrin explained that the nature of the offending was serious and that the fine needed to act as general deterrence, as well as take into account the ongoing impact upon the life of the victim.

No conviction was recorded.
